We Will Never Be the Same

People always succeed in comparing themselves to others, and the other way around... but fail to acknowledge that people can never be the same. Each person is different, comes with different and unique experiences, beliefs, and perspectives. Yet, we often find ourselves frustrated, silently expecting others to align with our way of thinking, working, or living.

Instead of trying to try and shape people into versions of yourself, real growth lies in adapting how you lead, interact, and collaborate with them, without compromising who you truly are. That’s what situational leadership is all about.

"One-Size-Fits-All" Leadership is B.S.

Leadership isn’t about having one style, one approach, or one set of expectations. Imagine trying to motivate a creative mind with rigid data-driven strategies or pushing a meticulous planner into spontaneous decision-making. It won’t work, not because one way is better, but because people are wired differently. Yet some managers are shocked when employees resign “out of the blue”!

Situational leadership isn’t about being inconsistent; it’s about being flexible in your approach while staying consistent with your values. Think of it like this: your values are the solid foundation, but the way you build on that foundation shifts depending on the person in front of you, the situation you’re in, and the goal you’re trying to achieve.

Values: Is What You Need to Make Sure You Have in Common

Most growth-driven, and sustainable companies emphasize hiring for values first. After that, they focus on diversity. This is basically an acknowledgement of how important it is to have different people come together, to create something bigger and greater due to their diverse perspectives, it’s not a marketing scam to trick potential employees into thinking they’re a cool company... (Well, at least not all of them).

Values are the glue that holds teams together. You don’t need everyone to think like you, work like you, or even agree with you. What you need is alignment on core principles. At Eon Dental, our values are: Care, Integrity, Quality, Accountability, Perseverance, and Agility. This the the baseline that we’re all aligned on. Once you get that out of the way, you start layering on top of that some more values, communication approaches, etc. It’s like pealing the layers of an onion, but in reverse.

That is how you build a culture

that’s hard for anyone to replicate, that is the driver of your company’s momentum and unparalleled speed. That is what will differentiate you in the market before your product can.

When values are aligned, diversity isn’t a threat. It’s an asset. Different perspectives challenge your thinking, spark innovation, and fill gaps you didn’t even know existed. Because you don’t know what you don’t know...

Your Standards Are Just… Yours

Here’s where many leaders get stuck: they confuse personal standards with universal truths.

Your standards, whether about work habits, communication styles, or decision-making processes; reflect your preferences. They’re not inherently better than anyone else’s. They’re just yours...

That doesn’t mean you should lower your expectations, but it does mean you need to recognize the difference between:

Personal Standards: How you like things to be done based on your experiences, personal preferences, and beliefs.
Quality of Work: The objective baseline that ensures effective teamwork, results, growth, good and considerate communication, and continuous improvement.

While people may never fully meet your personal standards (because they’re not you), the quality of work is non-negotiable, and that’s an important thing to be aligned on. This is where you all collectively push the line, aim for growth, and expect excellence.

Growth is in the Balance

Leadership isn’t about controlling people; it’s about creating a psychologically-safe environment where people thrive, not by becoming like you, but by becoming the best version of themselves.

A few things to keep in mind to find your balance:

Be solid in your values: practice what you preach, lead by example, and be authentic.
Be flexible in your approach: don’t get hung on the details that don’t matter. Be the bigger person.
Be relentless about quality: keep that as your focal point and north star. Align on the “What” and be flexible with the “How”.

You don’t have to be a leader by title to practice this. Leading by example doesn’t require a position... just action. Start doing it, and people will follow.

When you stop expecting people to be like you, you free yourself (and them) to focus on what truly matters: growth, impact, and meaningful collaboration.

Final Thoughts

You’ll never meet another you. That’s the beauty of it. When you embrace this, you’ll feel the weight lift off your chest.
Instead of wishing people would change, shift your perspective. Lead with values, adapt with flexibility, and drive growth through high standards of work.
Leadership isn’t about creating copies. It’s about unlocking potential.
Don’t wait for your superiors to start doing this, just start, and people will follow.
